I've Never Been to Allington 10 April 2021

Today my sister Kate and I explored a hitherto unknown pathway close to the tiny village of Allington. This is a part of the county of Wiltshire that I have explored in detail but I have never been to Allington.

It's like a lot of Wiltshire in this area in that there are wide open spaces with few trees and a big sky. Vast and dramatic it tells of high winds and perturbation in the sky.

The road here is narrow and winds between a few farmhouses and the villages the first of which is Horton and then nothing until you get to the village of Alton Barnes. The fields at this time of year are sprouting growth but nothing is established yet. Last year those fields were covered with the smiling faces of sunflowers.

It was cool today - cool enough to require light jackets but dry underfoot. The light wind was not uncomfortable but exhilarating and perfect for walking. Despite the coolness of the day spring lurked in the little bulbs that peeked their heads cautiously into the bright day.

We walked, a little under two miles and could see that there was potential for walking for hours. It was the kind of day where I could so easily pack a picnic and set out for the day. But unfortunately our own garden called us and we had to return.

It was only as we entered Devizes that I realised that I still haven't been to Allington!
